Ellis has caved in Europe and India for over forty years, acutely observing and absorbing the special surroundings that caving affords. Fired by the hostile but beautiful environment underground, he left full-time academic work to experiment with different art forms, including metal relief sculptures of caves, and to explore his thoughts, experiences and moods through his verse and prose.
